The Trump administration will create a federal registry for undocumented immigrants as part of its effort to crack down on border crossings, Department of Homeland Security officials said Tuesday.
Immigrants in the US illegally aged 14 and up will have to submit themselves for registration and fingerprinting or face fines and jail time, the department said in a statement. The effort is based on a provision, section 262, of the Immigration and Nationality Act that has not been enforced for decades. A US Citizenship and Immigration Services webpage says migrants can begin the registration process as of Tuesday.
