Trump to Waive Fines for Some Immigrants Who Leave on Their Own

The Department of Homeland Security will waive fines for immigrants without authorization to live in the country who leave under a “self-deportation” initiative the Trump administration launched earlier this year.

“If you are here illegally, use the CBP Home App to take control of your departure and receive financial support to return home,” Secretary Kristi Noem said in a statement Monday.

Immigrants are subject to fines of up to $1,000 a day if they don’t leave the US after a final deportation order. Noem’s announcement of fine forgiveness is the latest DHS effort to encourage migrants to leave voluntarily. The agency ...
