President Donald Trump’s proposal to hike military spending and drastically cut domestic funds for health care and social programs fueled Democratic attacks that the administration is out of step with Americans’ priorities ahead of this year’s midterm elections.
The budget released Friday pitched a historic $1.5 trillion for the Department of Defense for fiscal 2027, a 42% increase as the administration continues its operation in Iran. That’s paired with a $73 billion, 10% decrease in proposed domestic spending, including cuts to medical research, environmental and education programs, and diversity, equity and inclusion efforts across agencies.
