The Trump administration Thursday secured approval for its regulatory proposal to remake the college accreditation system in line with its vision for higher education.

The White House sees the college quality oversight system run by accreditors as a tool to force schools to comply with its political priorities, such as promoting ideological diversity among faculty and banning diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives it views as discriminatory.

At stake for colleges is access to over $100 billion in annual financial aid that federally recognized accreditors certify.
