A sweeping tax and spending bill Republicans are trying to push across the finish line this week includes steep new costs for immigrants pursuing work permits, applying for temporary visas, and facing enforcement proceedings.

The bevy of new fees is designed to help offset unprecedented funding — around $150 billion — for immigrant jails, deportations, border wall construction, and other elements of President Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration.
