Unpaid TSA Officers Feel Strain as Shutdown Negotiations Drag On

On Capitol Hill, lawmakers hurled accusations about who’s at fault for the Department of Homeland Security shutdown that’s left nearly 58,000 Transportation Security Administration officers unpaid and caused hours-long waits at airports.

But there’s plenty of fault to go around to one TSA officer standing outside Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport’s Terminal 2 on a cigarette break during another unpaid shift as he and his colleagues near the breaking point.

“At this point, everyone’s to blame,” said the agent with a decade of experience, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak with the press. ...
