Utah Lawmakers Aim to Shrink Clinton-Era National Monument

Utah Republicans are seeking to reduce the footprint of a popular national monument in the state by using a law to reverse decisions made by previous Democratic administrations.

The congressional delegation wants to shrink Grand Staircase-Escalante, a 1.9-million-acre national monument created in 1996 in the southern part of the state, to about half its current size. Rep. Celeste Maloy (R-Utah) is expected to introduce a disapproval resolution soon under the Congressional Review Act to invalidate a Biden-era resource management plan that restored the boundaries of the original monument, which President Donald Trump trimmed during his first term.
