Sen. Chris Van Hollen says he will travel to El Salvador Wednesday to fight for the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, an immigrant living in Maryland whom the Trump administration incorrectly sent to the Central American country’s most notorious prison.
Van Hollen’s announcement, at a town hall in Maryland, drew a standing ovation from a Democratic-friendly crowd.
“What authoritarian regimes do is they start by picking on the most vulnerable,” Van Hollen (D-Md.) said, noting that Abrego Garcia was in the US legally and has never been charged with, let alone convicted of, a crime.
