Senate Democrats failed to draw enough Republican support to block the Trump administration from conducting military strikes against suspected drug traffickers within or outside of Venezuela without an explicit authorization from Congress.
Democrats forced the 49-51 floor vote Thursday that gained some Republican support but ultimately failed to advance the war-powers resolution. The resolution (S.J.Res. 90) only needed a simple majority to advance.
It was a procedural vote to bypass the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and speed up consideration of the resolution.
