Donald Trump’s pick of Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) as his vice-presidential running mate won’t immediately jeopardize their party’s hold over Vance’s seat in the closely divided Senate if the Republican ticket is elected in November.
If Trump defeats President Joe Biden and Vance becomes vice president, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) would appoint a replacement senator who would serve through a special election in 2026, according to state law. The winner of that election would complete the final two years of Vance’s unexpired term, with a regular election for a six-year term to be held in 2028.
