It’s often said there are no winners in a government shutdown, and that’s largely the case again.

As the record-setting standoff nears an end, Republicans have suffered convincing electoral losses, President Donald Trump’s poll numbers are sinking, and the GOP has taken firm ownership of looming health care price hikes that could hammer millions of Americans.

Democrats, meanwhile, showed some fight against Trump and scored significant electoral wins. Then they immediately changed course and collapsed.
