Youth Online Safety Bills Face Industry and Advocacy Opposition

House Republicans working on legislation to protect children and teenagers online face steep resistance from Democrats and youth safety advocates who say their efforts are inadequate, and tech companies that claim they’re well-intentioned but flawed.

“The legislation that has been offered by the Republicans does not do the job,” Rep. Jan Schakowsky (Ill.), the top Democrat on the House Energy and Commerce subcommittee reviewing the package said during a Tuesday hearing. “We have a long, long way to go to protect our children.”
