ANALYSIS: Lawyers Have New Assistant to Supervise in 2025—Gen AI

Generative AI isn’t the new kid on the block in law anymore. Forty-five percent of the respondents to a recent Bloomberg Law survey question about how their employer is using generative AI said that they’re working with the technology in some capacity.

Meanwhile, state and local lawyer ethics authorities have been steadily issuing opinions clarifying the professional conduct rules that apply to lawyers’ use of generative AI, including the obligation under American Bar Association Model Rule 5.3 for lawyers to supervise nonlawyer assistants.
