Litigation against AI developers and the struggle to regulate the technology to make it safer show that there are concerns about AI safety as the technology’s use continues to climb. Legislators now face a critical question: How can laws guard against harmful AI systems without discouraging innovation?
The Texas Responsible AI Governance Act takes a step in that direction, and is one example of how to balance these interests. The law, which went into effect on Jan. 1, imposes restrictions on harmful AI uses but not to such an extent that might stifle innovation.
