Sergey Brin is spending millions of dollars to influence California politics, bankrolling two rival gubernatorial candidates and other political efforts, just months after ditching the state for Nevada.
The billionaire Google co-founder is now backing Fox News contributor Steve Hilton in the race for California governor. Hilton, a Republican who served as former adviser to British conservative Prime Minister David Cameron, received a $39,200 donation from Brin, according to a new campaign filing. Hilton’s wife, Rachel Whetstone, worked at Google from 2005 to 2015 and ran its communications and public policy efforts.
