Republicans launched their redistricting effort in Texas to give President Donald Trump and their party an advantage in next year’s midterm elections. Now, it’s backfiring, Anna Edgerton, Madlin Mekelburg, and Julie Fine report.

A panel of federal judges Tuesday temporarily blocked Texas from using in 2026 the new congressional map that would have given Republicans a shot at winning five more House seats. The GOP plans to appeal, but they’re on the clock: The primary is March 3 and candidates face a Dec. 8 deadline to file to run.
