Much has changed since the UK Treasury and Bank of England said a digital pound was “likely” to be needed, just three years ago.

Now the future of so-called Britcoin is hanging in the balance. Rather than a firm decision to approve or scrap the project, which had been expected this summer, UK officials are considering a middle route that means slowing down progress on the CBDC, according to people familiar with the situation.
