California, EU Climate Disclosures on the Horizon: Explained

The forecast for corporate emissions reporting has gotten murky.

US companies are facing demands from California to disclose their greenhouse gas emissions in 2026, while bracing for more state, federal, and European climate disclosure mandates in the months and years ahead. But widespread legal challenges make it difficult for companies to predict what they’ll need to do.

Big firms with California business are scheduled to start disclosing their emissions this summer, pending a legal review. A court is considering halting the requirement and extending a pause on a related California mandate for financial risk reporting on climate change.
