GOP Seeks Appeal to Voters in Midterms by Averting Tax Hike

Republicans campaigned on lowering prices and keeping taxes from going up. They swept Congress and the White House—and now face having to sell voters that they delivered.

The party promised working families they could keep more of their money, and warned of trillions of dollars in tax hikes if Democrats let the 2017 GOP tax law expire. But the vast majority of the Republicans’ tax bill being negotiated will likely just extend that law, meaning a substantial portion of the impact may not make year-over-year changes to Americans’ pocketbooks.
