Artificial Intelligence Stakeholders Call to Outlaw Deepfakes

Leading artificial intelligence experts, industry officials, and advocates signed an open letter this week calling on governments to implement new laws that combat the spread of harmful deepfakes.

The more than 850 signatories and counting are asking for regulations that criminalize deepfake child pornography, set criminal penalties against individuals who create and spread harmful deepfakes, and require developers to prevent their products from being misused to create such content.

The proliferation of deepfakes is a top concern for congressional lawmakers seeking to crack down on misinformation and disinformation. There are no federal laws that target deepfakes.
