Biden Urges Congress to Pass Safeguards on AI, Address Privacy

The sweeping White House directive on artificial intelligence marks the most significant step to date in regulating the technology, but Americans need further protections from harm, President Joe Biden says.

“This executive order represents bold action, but we still need Congress to act,” Biden said Monday as he unveiled the order, with technology industry officials, advocates, and lawmakers in attendance. It directs federal agencies to set rules on AI, with a focus on mitigating the tech’s potential risks, including privacy violations, job displacement, misinformation, and discrimination.
