BLS Data Show Union Membership Stable Despite Challenges (1)

Total union membership remained relatively unchanged in 2025, even in the face of tough political and economic headwinds.

The union membership rate sat at about 10% of US wage and salary workers in 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ annual report released Wednesday. About 9.9% of the workforce was unionized in 2024.

Union membership remains less common in the private sector, with 5.9% of workers unionized compared to 32.9% in the public sector.

The BLS report, traditionally released in January, was delayed due to the 43-day government shutdown last fall.
