A US government green card policy labeled discriminatory by churches was mostly upheld by a federal appeals court in Chicago, a partial loss for religious employers seeking to sponsor workers for permanent residency.
The US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit affirmed on Monday a district court’s dismissal of claims under the Religious Freedom and Restoration Act and the First Amendment after previously finding that plaintiffs didn’t preserve Equal Protection and Immigration and Nationality Act claims in briefs. But the appeals court remanded claims under the Administrative Procedure Act in light of Supreme Court precedent from last year.
