A bipartisan group of US senators struck a deal on legislation to regulate compensation and other protections for college athletes after similar efforts stalled in the House.
Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) plan to introduce the Protect College Sports Act, which would protect athletes’ ability to earn money off their name, image, and likeness, extend revenue-sharing requirements for colleges, and mandate that schools cover athletes’ medical costs. In exchange, the bill would limit athletes to one transfer in their collegiate career, give schools and the NCAA limited antitrust protections, and preempt state and local laws.
