Senators Seeking Bipartisan Deal to Pay Workers During Shutdown

Senators from both parties said they will try to find compromise on paying federal workers during the government shutdown after competing partisan plans to do so fell short earlier Thursday.

The Senate voted against advancing a bill (S. 3012; BGOV Bill Analysis) from Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) to pay federal employees and troops who’ve been forced to work without pay since the shutdown began Oct. 1. After the failed vote, Johnson said he already had some conversations with Democrats and was “quite hopeful” they could find a fix over the weekend.
