Virginia is set to explicitly ban workplace discrimination related to menopause or perimenopause and require accommodations for those conditions under legislation headed to Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s (D) desk.
The measure (SB 258) would make Virginia one of the few states to explicitly cover menopause as a protected characteristic in its ban on job bias. Rhode Island last year enacted the nation’s first state law specifically prohibiting workplace bias for menopause and requiring employers to provide reasonable accommodations for workers affected by menopausal symptoms.
