Wyoming Passes Gig Worker Benefit Bill Without Status Changes

Gig economy companies operating in Wyoming could contribute to workers’ portable benefits accounts without fear of triggering their reclassification as employees, under legislation heading to Gov. Mark Gordon (R).

The Wyoming Senate approved the House’s changes to the bill Monday, after both chambers previously passed a version of it.

The legislation (SF 41) would ensure contributions to worker benefits aren’t counted as a factor in employment classification. Companies such as Uber Technologies Inc. and DoorDash Inc. have advocated for similar policies to increase drivers’ access to benefits without losing their independent contractor status.
