Swiss Voters Want ‘Wedding Penalty’ Tax to End, Poll Shows

A majority of Swiss voters backs ending a tax structure that disadvantages double-income couples, according to a poll before a plebiscite in March.

Switzerland’s tax system currently favors couples in which one partner — often the husband — earns significantly more than the other. In turn, the burden of couples who earn similar salaries often ratchets up when they get married, as they are assessed on the basis of their combined incomes.

Removing this “wedding penalty” — which affects about 670,000 couples in Switzerland — is at the core of the proposal in the vote. The plan, backed by parliament ...
