California Bill Offers Low-Income Families Pre-Filled Tax Returns

California would offer free tax return filing with automatically filled-out forms to help low-income wage earners claim tax credits under a Senate bill advancing through the Legislature.

The bill (S.B. 565) by Sen. Anna Caballero (D) is meant to reach more people who don’t know they’re eligible for the tax credits or find it too difficult to file a tax return, by offering access to a form already filled in with wage data the Franchise Tax Board has.
