The California legislature passed a bill Thursday that exempts federally recognized Native American tribes from paying property and real estate transfer tax on returned ancestral land.
The bill, A.B. 1485, passed the state senate 40-0 last September, and got the final approval it needed from the assembly this week. It now moves to Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has until Sept. 1 to sign or veto it. Newsom hasn’t taken a position on the measure, which first passed the assembly 63-0 last June.
