It will be all hands on deck at the IRS if the government shuts down at midnight Friday, according to a Treasury Department plan updated Thursday and an internal memo from the acting commissioner.
All 95,486 IRS employees will be exempt and retained in the case of a government-wide shutdown, with operations continuing with funds from the 2022 tax-and-climate law, the fiscal year 2025 plan said. A memo from Acting IRS Commissioner Melanie Krause to all employees confirms that policy.
