Lawmakers and advocates are banking that bipartisan legislation to boost the US housing supply can become law this year, as both parties eye affordability issues ahead of the midterms.

Tackling the issue could help bring down one of the biggest drivers of inflation, and show voters that Washington is addressing consumer angst over high prices. President Donald Trump has been under pressure from fellow Republicans to spend more time talking about affordability, and weighed in Wednesday, taking aim at institutional investors in single-family homes.
