Democratic senators are asking the IRS to explain a sharp drop of criminal investigations into abusive tax schemes.
A recent IRS Criminal Investigation annual report showed tax scheme probes fell to a 10-year low in fiscal year 2025. The drop comes amid deep staffing cuts by the Trump administration in its crusade to downsize the federal government. Republicans also clawed back tens of billions of dollars the IRS got in a 2022 law to bolster enforcement.
