Charter Loses Bid for Lower Tech Tax Rate at NY Appeals Court

Charter Communications Inc.'s combined group wasn’t entitled to a New York tax break for tech companies because not every included unit met the legal requirements, a state appeals court ruled.

Charter, formerly known as Time Warner Cable, didn’t convince the appeals court to overturn a 2024 state tax tribunal ruling that the company owes an additional $7.8 million in tax and interest for tax years 2012 to 2014 because some members weren’t located in New York. If the lower rate applied, the company’s total tax bill for those years would have been less than $200,000.
