When Mitt Romney got laughed out of a presidential election for saying, “Corporations are people, my friend,” it was still just barely possible to predict with a straight face that maybe, somehow, the Citizens United ruling wouldn’t flood the US political system with dark money.

Elon Musk, soon to be the first trillion-dollar man, was worth a piddling $1 billion. Knicks tickets were available for less than the price of a car.
