The US Supreme Court signaled it is likely to rule Friday on a law that threatens to shut down the TikTok video-sharing platform.
In an announcement on its website Thursday, the court said the justices may issue an opinion Friday at 10 a.m. Washington time.
The court never says in advance which opinions it will issue on particular days. But it has handled the TikTok case on an expedited basis, and a ruling Friday would provide clarity before the law is scheduled to take effect Sunday. The court would be taking the unusual step of ruling in an argued case without taking the bench.
The law requires TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance Ltd., to sell the social media platform by Jan. 19 or face a ban.
