The US Labor Department wants to end an expansion of minimum wage and overtime protections to some home health aides.
The proposal, to be published in the Federal Register July 2, would rescind a 2013 rule issued by the Obama administration that limited an exemption from the Fair Labor Standards Act for at-home direct care workers that provide “companionship services” for elderly or disabled people.
The DOL said the rulemaking is necessary because “the 2013 regulations might not reflect the best interpretation of the FLSA and might discourage essential companionship services by making these services more expensive.”
