Hochul Signs NY Violence Prevention Bill for Retailers Into Law

Retailers in New York must develop workplace violence prevention plans and train their employees on safety procedures under legislation Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) signed into law.

The measure (A 8947 / S 8358) creates one of the most expansive workplace violence laws for retail employers in the country. Most of the law’s requirements apply only to retailers with 10 or more employees and take effect 180 days after Hochul’s signature on Thursday, such as training employees on how to deescalate conflict with customers and respond to gun violence.
