Red States Take Up Election ID Measures After Senate Bill Stalls

The SAVE America Act’s path in the Senate has effectively closed, shifting the fight over voter identification requirements to the states and setting up the next front in the election policy battle.

The House-passed bill stalled in the Senate, where it lacks the 60 votes needed to advance. President Donald Trump called on Congress to pass the bill during his State of the Union address, but its path in the Senate is, for now, doomed. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) said this week his conference is “not unified” on using a so-called talking filibuster to push it forward.
