Tree Cutters Need Better Protections, Lawmakers Tell OSHA (1)

A bipartisan group of lawmakers is urging the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to issue a safety standard for the tree-trimming industry, which one Republican congressman called “one of the most hazardous” in the nation.

OSHA has shown “negligence” in not having a specific rule for workers who cut and trim trees, Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-Calif.), chair of the House Workforce Protections Subcommittee, said Wednesday.

“OSHA must act to protect tree care workers and provide regulatory consistency,” Kiley said as part of a hearing that also addressed the agency’s recent proposals on heat stress and fire brigades.
