Manitoba Adds Unpaid Adoption Leave

Amendments to Manitoba’s Employment Standards Code establish unpaid leave for employees adopting a child or having a surrogate give birth to their child. The amendments received assent from the lieutenant governor of the Canadian province June 1.

The Employment Standards Code Amendment Act (Attachment Leave for Adoption and Surrogacy) introduces a 16-week period of attachment leave that can start up to six weeks before the estimated date of “placement,” which the act uses to refer to both adoption of a child and birth by a surrogate.
