New California Law Requires AI Training Data Transparency

California has enacted the most comprehensive US rules for disclosing what data is fed to artificial intelligence models under legislation Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed Saturday.

The bill (AB 2013) by Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin (D) applies only to generative AI, the type that uses human prompts to create text, images, and similar content. Tech titans like Meta Platforms Inc. and OpenAI Inc. are starving for digital data—from news articles to photos—to develop their most powerful models.
