Texas Gun Owners Challenge Federal Registration After Tax Ends

Federal registration requirements for short-barreled rifles, shotguns and suppressors should be ended, a coalition of gun advocates said in a new lawsuit, following Congress’ termination of an excise tax on those firearms.

The registration requirements exist only to facilitate enforcement of the removed tax, the lawsuit says.

“While the NFA’s regulations may have been permissible in support of the statute’s taxes on making and transferring firearms, that justification no longer remains for items whose making and transfer are no longer taxed,” the lawsuit says.
