The Wisconsin Constitution protects the rights to bodily autonomy, integrity, and self-determination, which include the rights to access abortion and contraception, advocates told the state’s top court Thursday.
Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin, joined by two doctors and four patients, filed a petition asking the Wisconsin Supreme Court to declare that abortion is legal in the state. An 1849 statute that made it a felony to “intentionally destroy the life of an unborn child,” except when necessary to save the mother’s life, violates the fundamental rights of people who may become pregnant and their physicians, the group said.
