The Trump administration announced changes to an organ donation pilot program intended to increase access to kidneys for patients with end-stage renal disease.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services says that changes outlined in Thursday’s final rule (RIN 0938-AV65) aim to increase the number of kidney transplants and improve patients’ experience during the transplant process. The modifications include excluding military and Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals from the program, updates to the number of kidney procedures needed to be eligible for payments under the model, and revised timelines for paying back performance penalties.
