Trump May Impose Iran Tariff Using Rejected Law, Aide Says (1)

President Donald Trump has the authority to enact new Iran-related duties under an emergency law the Supreme Court previously ruled could not be used to impose tariffs, his top economic adviser said.

National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett said Thursday the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act could be used because the US is “in a state of conflict.” Trump has threatened to apply 50% duties on goods from countries supplying Iran with weaponry. His power to do so was immediately called into question, given the court’s decision.
