OpenAI Says Authors Must Show Industry Harm Evidence in AI Suit

OpenAI Inc. asked a federal judge to force authors suing the company over its AI training to hand over documents backing up their allegations that ChatGPT adversely changed financial trends in the book industry.

OpenAI said it needed the information because the plaintiffs’ “market harm” argument is a “core” issue in the lawsuit and asked for an informal discovery conference to resolve the dispute, according to two separate motions to compel addressed to Magistrate Judge Ona T. Wang and filed Monday in the US District Court in the Southern District of New York.
