Samsung Patent Invalidity Win Stays $12.5 Million Texas Dispute

Samsung Electronics Co. convinced an administrative tribunal to invalidate a wireless communications patent claim at the center of a $12.5 million jury verdict.

The Patent Trial and Appeal Board determined in December that claim 25 of US Patent No. 8,798,120 was unpatentable, according to an order filed Wednesday in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. Judge Rodney Gilstrap stayed Samsung’s dispute with Empire Technology Development LLC pending the resolution of petitions and appeals concerning the patent.
