FirstEnergy State Corruption Trial Opens in Ohio Courtroom

The specter of a dead Ohio utilities regulator loomed large during opening statements Tuesday in a trial for two former FirstEnergy Corp. executives accused of state charges stemming from what prosecutors said was a $4.3 million bribe.

The actions of Samuel C. Randazzo were front and center, as an assistant state attorney general told a state trial court jury in Akron, Ohio that the ex-official was paid off in 2019 by former FirstEnergy CEO Charles Jones and fellow former executive Michael Dowling for his influence once he became the chairman of the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio.
