The Missouri general assembly sued to block a state referendum targeting its effort to implement new US Congressional maps.
The attempt by People Not Politicians, a voter advocacy group, to place the redistricting-focused ballot measure before voters violates both the US Constitution and the Missouri Constitution, the state said in its complaint.
“Absent a clear statement in the Missouri Constitution transferring the apportionment power from the General Assembly to a ballot referendum, defendants cannot proceed with their referendum,” the state says.
The defendants declined to comment Wednesday.
